One Step at a Time

One step at a time. Incremental progress. Often, this is how great things are achieved. Sometimes it can be tempting to become discouraged when one looks back in the past and up to the present to measure what he has accomplished. This can also apply to collectives or movements. We sometimes think that we should be further along by now, or more mature in a certain area of life, than we are. But God is not discouraged at all — not about us,  and not about our progress. So neither should we be discouraged. The fact that we are simply making forward progress at all, rather than regressing or going backwards, is, in and of itself, a thing worth celebrating.

God has not only all of time, but all of eternity, on His hands. He holds time in His hands. He is not constrained or limited by time. And if we are in Him, if we are born again believers, we are not limited or constrained by time, either. We, indeed, have all of eternity ahead of us, and we will not stop growing, maturing, and developing even after we get to Heaven.

We need to be patient with ourselves. It is better to take one step forward with certainty and sure footing than ten steps forward with haphazardness, uncertainty, and loose footing. When God has birthed something in our lives, He will firmly establish it and cause it to come to pass in its fullness. Philippians 1:6 (NKJV) records these words of Paul: “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” We will continue to grow in God until the day that we go to be with the Lord, or until the day that He returns to take us home. Don’t be discouraged about your progress in Him!
